Breaking New Ground

Teachers, librarians and parents all know how important it is for young readers to access great books that inspire and enthral. But children’s books also need to reflect the diversity of our world and our nation, our communities and families.

Breaking New Ground is an invaluable new resource which champions and celebrates over 100 British children’s writers and illustrators of colour. Through this beautifully designed catalogue, anyone who buys, borrows, publishes or programmes books and authors for children can explore and access the enormous diversity of literary talent active in Britain today.

Come and experience Breaking New Ground at The Crescent, part of a national touring showcase of some of the very best featured writers and illustrators, and learn more about how and why children from all backgrounds deserve to see each other in the books they read. Speakers at the Belfast leg of this tour are:

  • Michael de Souza, creator of Rastamouse
  • Sarwat Chadda, author of The Ash Mistry series
  • Valerie Bloom MBE, three-time winner of the CLPE Poetry Award
  • Ken Wilson-Max, author of The Drum, The Flute, and Astro Girl

This is a free event open to all the public but especially beneficial to teachers and librarians.
