Famished

Famished explores the Irish Famine through poetry, music and song. Voicing a collective lament, this performance offers audiences the space to experience cultural and political history in an innovative and healing way.

Examining the role of colonialism on the largest migration of the nineteenth century, Cherry Smyth draws inspiration from the ‘coffin ships’ that crossed the Atlantic to form this poetic sequence, which also gives voice to and explores the effect of the Famine on women. Working in collaboration with musician Ed Bennett and vocalist Lauren Kinsella, this multi-vocal work makes an important contribution to understanding a key historical event.

The Belfast Book Festival is delighted to host the final performance of a five month tour around Ireland and the UK, come and experience this beautiful and delicate exploration of the Irish Famine.
