Tell it Slant: Magpie Techniques to Deepen & Layer Flash Fiction

Workshop

Join Marie Gethins from Banshee Press for a workshop to develop Flash Fiction techniques.

Emily Dickinson wrote: tell all the truth but tell it slant. Flash fiction, one of the most adaptable and playful genres, particularly lends itself to experimentation.

In this workshop, participants will read and discuss flash examples from Banshee and beyond that use math problems, lists, instruction manuals, definitions, shapes and more to transform familiar plotlines and layer in emotional depth.

Short bursts of writing time during the workshop will generate initial drafts, showing how to incorporate magpie techniques that can enrich your work in new and innovative ways.

Marie Gethins’ work appears or is forthcoming in Winter Papers, Australian Book Review, Reed, The London Magazine, Bristol Short Story Prize Anthology, The Lonely Crowd, Banshee, NFFD Anthologies, Fictive Dream, Pure Slush, Bath Flash Fiction Anthologies, FlashBack Fiction, Jellyfish Review, Litro and many others. Selected for Best Microfictions, BIFFY50 and Best Small Fictions, Marie is a recipient of a Frank O’Connor Bursary, a residency at Banff Center for Arts and Creativity, and a Hawthornden Fellowship. She edits for flash ezine Splonk, critiques for Oxford Flash Fiction Prize, and lives in Cork. Maire is Flash Fiction Editor at Banshee literary journal.
